The Lighthouse Club
The Lighthouse Club was founded in the United Kingdom by Eddie Ward in 1956. At that time there wasn't a charity dedicated to the construction industry, which the Club's founders wanted to create. By 1960 the Club's founders realised there was enough being raised to actually create a charity specifically for their industry. The result was the Lighthouse Club Benevolent Fund which was registered with the UK Charity Commissioners in 1962.
The Club is now over 50 years old and its popularity is such that it has spread beyond the U.K. to the Netherlands, South Africa, Asia/Pacific, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. There are nearly 8,000 members worldwide all of whom will extend a welcome to their fellow members. The Lighthouse Club is recognised and regarded with respect and affection throughout the construction industry.
The Lighthouse Club motto, “Allis Cum Humanitate” is a Latin phrase for “consideration for others”.
The Lighthouse Club Manila
Lighthouse Club (LHC) Manila Branch is a non-government organisation whose members are primarily associated with the construction industry although membership is open to all sectors of industry. Lighthouse Club Manila was founded in 1997 by a number of Lighthouse Club stalwarts who had formerly been working in Hong Kong. Although a relatively small branch of the worldwide network, LHC Manila has been successfully involved with numerous, and some quite remarkable, charitable causes.
The principal aim has been to foster good fellowship, camaraderie and cooperation amongst members, and to be considerate to the less fortunate in Manila and the wider Philippines. To raise funds for its charitable objectives LHC Manila organises monthly events and a prestigious annual Charity Ball in the autumn. During these events members meet to relax, network, develop their business and personal relationships while having fun and raising money for charitable projects.
Historic Charitable Projects
Past projects include construction and support of the Rehoboth Children’s Home, Tanay; design and management of improvements to Shalom Bata Children’s Rescue Centre, Merville; renovation of pediatric wards at Ospital Ng Manila; processing of applications for assistance benefits under the John Battersby Trust; and sponsoring attendance of Philippine Red Cross First Aid and CPR courses designed for construction workers.
Current Charitable Projects
The LHC current major project is the sponsorship of students of construction related trades at the Erdatech Foundation Technical High School in Manila. Construction industry members also give priority to employing construction trade graduates from technical colleges and high school vocational programs including Erdatech Foundation.
Additionally, LHC undertakes other construction related charitable projects, while some of its members are also provide support and professional construction guidance to the Philippine Christian Foundation’s school building project in Tondo.
